What is GERD surgery?

Surgeons perform the surgery for GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) to improve or repair the esophageal sphincter’s (consuming the opening of the stomach) ability to exert effectiveness from acid reflux. The most frequent procedure is fundoplication, in which surgeons encircle the apex of the stomach around the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to improve the activity of the LES.

Why is GERD Surgery Needed?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is recommended for individuals who:

  • Experience severe symptoms and unresponsive to medications.
  • Have complications such as esophagitis, stricture, or Barrett’s esophagus.
  • Want a long-term solution without depending on medications.
  • Have a hiatal hernia contributing to acid reflux.

Types of GERD Surgery

  1. Nissen Fundoplication:
  • The most common surgery for Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  • Shifts the stomach around the LES in a 360-degree wrap.
  1. Partial Fundoplication:
  • For patients where a full wrap isn’t ideal.
  • Includes procedures like Toupet or Dor fundoplication.
  1. Laparoscopic Surgery:
  • Miniaturized incision for esophagectomy and wrap-up surgery.
  1. LINX Device Surgery:
  • A wearable radial magnetic annulus is placed over the LES as an adjuvant for the treatment of reflux.

Procedure Steps

  1. Pre-Surgery Preparation:
  • Diagnostic tests like endoscopy, pH monitoring, and manometry.
  • Adjustments to medications and dietary restrictions.
  1. Surgical Process:
  • Performed under general anesthesia.
  • Concerning the kind of procedure, the LES can be reinforced or restored.
  1. Post-Surgery Care:
  • Hospital admission (and its duration in minimally invasive surgery).
  • Pureed or liquid diets, followed by soft diets.

Benefits of Gastroesophageal reflux disease

  • Long-term relief from acid reflux and associated symptoms.
  • Less use of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medications.
  • Prevention of GERD complications like Barrett’s esophagus.
  • Improved quality of life.

Risks and Complications

GERD surgery has potential risks, including:

  1. Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
  2. Gas-bloat syndrome.
  3. Surgical site infection.
  4. Recurrence of GERD symptoms in rare cases.
  5. Adverse reactions to anesthesia.

GERD Surgery Cost

  • India: The cost of $3,000-$6,000 for GERD surgery depends on the hospital and the procedure.
  • USA: Costs are significantly higher, averaging between $15,000 to $30,000.

Why Choose India for GERD Surgery?

India offers:

  • World-class medical facilities with highly trained surgeons.
  • Affordable treatment without compromising quality.
  • Access to state-of-the-art technology and techniques.
