Hernia Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide

Introduction

Hernia surgery is an everyday medical surgery to repair hernias, which are defects in which a structure (organ or fat) breaks out of a weak point in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. What is Hernia Surgery?

Hernia surgery is an operative procedure to treat hernias and prevent the recurrence of associated complications like pain or strangulation of the organ. The procedure may be carried out with an open or minimally invasive approach (laparoscopic, robotic, etc., depending on the nature and extent of the disease.

Why is Hernia Surgery Needed?

Hernioplasty is necessary to:

  • Relieve pain caused by the hernia.
  • Prevent complications like intestinal obstruction or strangulation.
  • Restore functionality to the affected area.
  • Avoid further enlargement of the hernia.

Types of Hernia Surgery

  1. Open Hernioplasty
  • Contains one long, extensive incision over the hernia opening for its closure.
  1. Laparoscopic Hernioplasty
  • A minimally invasive approach that is based on small incisions, a camera, and surgical instruments for repair.
  1. Robotic Hernioplasty
  • The high level (advanced) of laparoscopic surgery with greater control using robotic arms.
  1. Emergency Hernioplasty
  • Performed when there is a strangulating or occlusive hernia, necessitating prompt treatment.

Procedure Steps

  1. Pre-surgery Preparations:
  • Physical examination and image test for the hernia assessment.
  • Preoperative instructions, including fasting.
  1. Anesthesia:
  • General, regional, or local anesthesia is then provided by the type of procedure to be performed.
  1. Hernia Repair:
  • The hernia sac is put back in place, and the defect is strengthened with sutures or mesh.
  1. Closure:
  • Incisions are closed using sutures or surgical staples.
  1. Recovery:
  • Postoperative care instructions are provided for faster recovery.

Benefits of Hernia Surgery

  • Immediate relief from pain and discomfort.
  • Prevention of life-threatening complications.
  • Better quality of life and performance in activities of daily living.
  • High success rates, especially with advanced surgical techniques.

Risks and Complications

While hernia surgery is generally safe, potential risks include:

  • Infection at the surgical site.
  • Recurrence of the hernia.
  • Chronic pain in the operated area.
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia.
  • Blood clots or nerve damage (rare).

Comparison of Hernia Surgery Cost in India vs. USA.

  • India: The price varies from $600 to $1,500 (₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000) depending on the pricing of the hospital and type of operations.
  • USA: The average cost is between $3,500 and $12,000 and therefore India is a relatively lower-cost alternative for the quality of care.
